In short

  • You are agreeing to a binding contract with Uber that requires you to resolve disputes through private arbitration instead of court.
  • This agreement waives your right to a jury trial and prohibits you from joining or starting a group lawsuit against the company.
  • You also accept that Uber can change these terms at any time, and your continued use of the app counts as your approval of those changes.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to resolve all disputes with Uber in private, binding arbitration rather than in a public court.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By agreeing to these Terms, you agree that you are required to resolve any claim and/or lawsuit that you may have against Uber on an individual basis in binding arbitration... and not as a class, collective, coordinated, consolidated, mass and/or representative action.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to waive your right to have a jury trial in any legal proceedings against Uber.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT BY AGREEING TO THESE TERMS YOU ARE WAIVING YOUR RIGHT TO SEEK RELIEF IN A COURT OF LAW AND WAIVING YOUR RIGHT TO HAVE A JURY TRIAL ON YOUR CLAIMS.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that you cannot participate in a class-action lawsuit against Uber, even if you did not start it.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“This Arbitration Agreement will preclude you from bringing any class, collective, coordinated, consolidated, mass, and/or representative action against Uber, and also preclude you from participating in or recovering relief in any current or future class... action brought against Uber by someone else”
  4. 04

You are agreeing that Uber can change these Terms at any time without special notice, and using the service means you accept the new rules.

    This product

“Uber reserves the right to modify these Terms or its policies relating to the Services at any time, effective upon posting of an updated version of these Terms through the Services or Uber’s website... your continued use of the Services after any such changes constitutes your agreement to such changes.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Forced arbitration or class-action waiver

You are agreeing to give up your right to go to court and must handle all disputes through private, individual arbitration.

“By agreeing to these Terms, you agree that you are required to resolve any claim and/or lawsuit that you may have against Uber on an individual basis in binding arbitration... and not as a class, collective, coordinated, consolidated, mass and/or representative action.”

What that means: You lose the ability to join forces with other users to challenge Uber, making individual claims too costly or difficult to pursue.

The document mandates that all legal disputes be settled through private arbitrators rather than public courts. It explicitly bans group lawsuits, forcing each user to fight their own case alone.

High cost

Jury trial or court access waived

You are agreeing to waive your right to a jury trial and public court access for any claims against Uber.

“PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT BY AGREEING TO THESE TERMS YOU ARE WAIVING YOUR RIGHT TO SEEK RELIEF IN A COURT OF LAW AND WAIVING YOUR RIGHT TO HAVE A JURY TRIAL ON YOUR CLAIMS.”

What that means: Your case is decided by a private individual chosen by the companies' arbitration providers, who may favor repeat corporate customers.

You explicitly waive the constitutional right to have a judge or jury hear your case in a public courtroom. All decisions are made by a privately hired arbitrator.

Medium cost

You take the risk of injury or death

You are agreeing to accept the risks of using autonomous vehicles, including the possibility that they cannot assist in emergencies.

“If you use AV Services, you acknowledge that you understand the risks described in this section... The AVs are not designed to provide transportation services in connection with emergencies, such as if a person needs to be transported to a hospital for urgent or emergency care.”

What that means: You accept that self-driving cars may not help in medical emergencies or function erratically, potentially leaving you in dangerous situations.

While you do not sign a separate injury waiver, you acknowledge specific risks associated with autonomous vehicles, including their potential failure to provide emergency transport.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that Uber can change these terms at any time and that your continued use of the app binds you to those changes.

“Uber reserves the right to modify these Terms or its policies relating to the Services at any time, effective upon posting of an updated version of these Terms through the Services or Uber’s website. Your continued use of the Services after any such changes constitutes your agreement to such changes.”

What that means: You may be bound by new unfair terms without ever receiving a direct alert or having to click 'Accept' again.

Uber can change the rules whenever they want. They do not need to notify you specifically; simply keeping the app installed means you agree to the new version.

If these terms already apply to you

Keep this list. Fineprint cannot undo or cancel something you already agreed to at the company.

We cannot see Agree on their site. With Premium, tap “I accepted these terms” if you already agreed to what Uber asks.
