What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that changes to these terms take effect immediately upon posting and that continued use constitutes acceptance.

“Apple reserves the right at any time to modify this Agreement and to add new or additional terms or conditions on your use of the Services. Such modifications and additional terms and conditions will be effective immediately and incorporated into this Agreement. Your continued use of the Services will be deemed acceptance thereof.”

What that means: The rules governing your account can change overnight without prior warning, potentially altering your rights or obligations instantly.

Apple can change these terms at any time, and they take effect immediately. You do not get meaningful notice or consent opportunities, as simply continuing to use the service counts as agreement.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Apple is not responsible for making purchased content available indefinitely and takes no liability if it disappears.

“THE SERVICES AND ALL CONTENT DELIVERED TO YOU THROUGH THE SERVICES ARE (EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY STATED BY APPLE) PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" FOR YOUR USE, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND... YOU AGREE THAT UNLESS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, APPLE HAS NO RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTINUE MAKING CONTENT AVAILABLE TO YOU THROUGH OUR SERVICES, AND APPLE WILL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU IF CONTENT, INCLUDING PURCHASED CONTENT, BECOMES UNAVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD, REDOWNLOAD, OR STREAMING.”

What that means: You may pay for content that later becomes inaccessible, with no refund or remedy provided by Apple.

Apple provides services and content without guarantees. They are not liable if purchased content disappears from their servers, leaving you with no way to access it again.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to waive the right to sue Apple for consequential, indirect, or special damages arising from your use of the services.

“IN NO CASE SHALL APPLE, ITS DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AFFILIATES, AGENTS, CONTRACTORS, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF ANY OF THE SERVICES OR FOR ANY OTHER CLAIM RELATED IN ANY WAY TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICES AND/OR CONTENT...”

What that means: If Apple's service causes data loss, business interruption, or other significant harm to you, you generally cannot recover those costs from them.

Apple caps its financial liability for almost all damages, excluding only personal injury claims where required by law. This shifts significant risk onto the user.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to one comprehensive agreement that covers all listed Apple media and application services.

“This Agreement governs your use of Apple’s services (“Services”) through which you can buy, get, license, rent or subscribe to content, Apps (as defined below), and other in-app services... Examples of Services include, where available, App Store, Subscriptions (as defined below), Apple Arcade, Apple Books, Apple Fitness+, Apple Games, Game Center, Apple Music, Apple News, Apple One, Apple Podcasts, Apple Sports, Apple TV, iTunes, and Shazam.”

What that means: Your single agreement binds you to rules across dozens of different products and features simultaneously.

One set of terms applies across Apple's entire digital ecosystem, from movies and music to apps and fitness classes. There is no option to opt out of specific service terms while using others.

Medium cost

Auto-renewal or hard-to-cancel paid terms

You are agreeing to automatic renewal of subscriptions and responsibility for charges even if initial payment methods fail.

“Subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled in the Manage Subscriptions section of your account settings. ... If we cannot charge your payment method for any reason (such as expiration or insufficient funds), and you have not cancelled the Subscription, you remain responsible for any uncollected amounts, and we will attempt to charge the payment method as you may update your payment method information.”

What that means: You may lose money automatically if you forget to cancel, and you remain liable even if your primary card fails.

Paid subscriptions renew by default. If a payment fails due to expired cards or low funds, Apple still holds you responsible for the debt and will try to charge other stored payment methods.

Medium cost

In-app charges or kids’ spending

You are agreeing to allow in-app purchases for 15 minutes without re-authentication after your initial login.

“You will be able to make additional In-App Purchases for fifteen (15) minutes without re-authenticating unless you have asked us to require a password for every purchase or have enabled Touch ID or Face ID.”

What that means: A child or anyone else using your device could make multiple purchases within 15 minutes of a single authentication.

After authenticating once, users can make further purchases within an app for 15 minutes without entering a password again. This allows accidental or unauthorized spending within that window.

Medium cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Apple a perpetual, worldwide license to use any materials you submit to the services.

“Except to the extent prohibited by law, you hereby grant Apple a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, nonexclusive license to use the materials you submit within the Services and related marketing as well as to use the materials you submit for Apple internal purposes.”

What that means: You lose control over your submitted content, which Apple can use commercially or internally forever without paying you.

When you submit reviews, photos, or podcasts, Apple keeps indefinite rights to use them for marketing and internal purposes, not just to display them on the app.

Lower cost

You take the risk of injury or death

You are agreeing to release Apple from liability regarding security intrusions, hacking, or virus attacks on the services.

“APPLE DOES NOT REPRESENT OR GUARANTEE THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE FREE FROM LOSS, CORRUPTION, ATTACK, VIRUSES, INTERFERENCE, HACKING, OR OTHER SECURITY INTRUSION, AND YOU HEREBY RELEASE APPLE FROM ANY LIABILITY RELATING THERETO.”

What that means: If your account is compromised via a hack, Apple has limited legal exposure, and you are expected to manage your own backup risks.

Apple states it does not guarantee security against hacking or viruses. While users must back up their own data, Apple disclaims liability for security breaches affecting the services.
