In short

  • These terms create a contract between you and Apple for using services like the App Store, iTunes, and Apple Music.
  • You agree to various rules regarding payments, account usage, and content licensing.
  • The agreement allows Apple to change terms or suspend services with little notice and limits its legal liability significantly.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that subscriptions automatically renew until you cancel them in your account settings.

    This product

“Subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled in the Manage Subscriptions section of your account settings.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to indemnify Apple and hold it harmless against claims arising from your breach of the agreement or use of services.

    This product

“By using the Services, you agree, to the extent permitted by law, to indemnify and hold Apple... harmless with respect to any claims arising out of your breach of this Agreement, your use of the Services...”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that your use of the services is at your sole risk and apple provides them 'as is' without warranties.

    This product

“YOU EXPRESSLY AGREE THAT YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, OR ACTIVITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE SERVICES IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. THE SERVICES... ARE PROVIDED 'AS IS' AND 'AS AVAILABLE' FOR YOUR USE, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND...”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that Apple can change these rules anytime and your continued use means you accept the new version.

“Apple reserves the right at any time to modify this Agreement... Your continued use of the Services will be deemed acceptance thereof.”

What that means: You may accept unfavorable rule changes without explicitly clicking 'I Agree' again.

Apple can change the terms whenever it wants, and simply keeping your account active counts as accepting those new changes.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to waive your right to recover damages from Apple for most types of harm or loss.

“IN NO CASE SHALL APPLE... BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES... INCLUDING... ANY INJURY, LOSS OR DAMAGE OF ANY KIND INCURRED AS A RESULT OF THE USE OF ANY CONTENT...”

What that means: If something goes wrong, like data corruption or injury from advice given, you cannot sue for compensation.

Apple refuses responsibility for almost any negative outcome resulting from their service, including injury or data loss.

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Apple permanent, free rights to any material you upload or submit to their platforms.

“Except to the extent prohibited by law, you hereby grant Apple a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, nonexclusive license to use the materials you submit within the Services... as well as to use the materials you submit for Apple internal purposes.”

What that means: Your creative contributions become property that Apple can exploit without asking or paying you further.

Any reviews, comments, or uploads you post give Apple permanent rights to use them however they see fit.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that this single contract governs your use of all listed Apple media and software services.

“Examples of Services include... App Store, Subscriptions... Apple Arcade, Apple Books, Apple Fitness+, Apple Games, Game Center, Apple Music, Apple News, Apple One, Apple Podcasts, Apple Sports, Apple TV, iTunes, and Shazam.”

What that means: Accepting terms for one app likely subjects you to the same rules across dozens of other Apple products.

One agreement covers a vast array of distinct products and services, binding you to all of them simultaneously.

Medium cost

Auto-renewal or hard-to-cancel paid terms

You are agreeing that your subscription payments will keep happening until you manually stop them.

“Subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled in the Manage Subscriptions section of your account settings.”

What that means: You might continue paying for services you no longer want because you forgot to cancel.

Paid plans continue indefinitely unless you actively go into settings to turn off the renewal feature.

Medium cost

In-app charges or kids’ spending

You are agreeing to allow a 15-minute period where no password or biometric check is needed for extra spending.

“You will be able to make additional In-App Purchases for fifteen (15) minutes without re-authenticating unless you have asked us to require a password for every purchase...”

What that means: A child or unauthorized user could make multiple purchases within that short window without further permission checks.

Once authenticated, the system allows purchases for a 15-minute window without asking for a password again.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing that parents can create accounts for minors under the age of 13 via Family Sharing.

“You must be age thirteen (13)... to create an account... Apple Accounts for persons under this age can be created by a parent or legal guardian using Family Sharing...”

What that means: Children under 13 can access the ecosystem if a parent sets up a Family Sharing account for them.

The document sets a minimum age but allows younger children to participate through parental oversight features.
