In short

  • You agree that Uber collects precise location, biometric identity data, and audio/video recordings from in-vehicle cameras.
  • You accept that this data is shared with advertising partners for tracking and marketing purposes across the internet.
  • Your personal data is retained for up to seven years or indefinitely if needed for legal defense or safety.

What you accept

If you use this site

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

Fineprint cannot see whether you agreed. This page is posted on their site. Open the original if you need to know how they say it applies.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to collect precise location data while you use the app.

    This product

“We also determine your approximate location and can determine your precise location if you allow us to do so through the settings on your phone. If you do, we will collect your precise location from the time you request a ride or order until the ride is finished or your order is delivered.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to submit facial verification selfies and biometric data for account security.

    This product

“Biometric data is generated when we use facial verification technology to confirm that your account is not being used by anyone other than you... collecting a real-time selfie that we compare against the photo on your ID...”
  3. 03

You are agreeing to data sharing with ad partners like Criteo, Google, and Meta for tracking.

    Other companies

“Ad intermediaries, such as Criteo, Google, Rokt, The Trade Desk, TripleLift and others... Social media companies, including Meta and TikTok...”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Location or sensitive-data over-collection

You are agreeing to provide facial verification selfies and biometric scans for account security and fraud prevention.

“Biometric data is generated when we use facial verification technology to confirm that your account is not being used by anyone other than you... User-submitted selfies... Facial verification information”

What that means: You give up highly sensitive biometric identity data to Uber for every new account or periodic verification.

Uber collects facial scans and government IDs to verify age and identity. This involves sensitive biological characteristics beyond basic contact info.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let third parties track your device across other websites and apps for advertising purposes.

“We may also allow others to provide audience measurement and analytics services for us, to serve ads on our behalf across the internet or for other companies’ products and services on our apps, and to track and report on the performance of those ads. These entities may use cookies, web beacons, SDKs and other technologies to identify the devices used by visitors to our websites, as well as when they visit other online sites and services.”

What that means: Your online activity outside Uber is tracked by partners to target you with ads on other sites.

Third-party partners are allowed to track users across different websites and apps using device identifiers to build profiles for advertising.

High cost

Car or smart-home data always on

You are agreeing to audio and video recording by in-cabin cameras during autonomous rides.

“In-Vehicle Recordings. If you take a ride in an autonomous vehicle, we will collect videos of you taken by in-cabin cameras. We may also collect audio recordings, such as when you contact Uber during a trip for customer support purposes.”

What that means: You are recorded visually and audibly inside autonomous cars even when not actively seeking customer support.

Autonomous vehicles collect continuous video and audio of riders inside the cabin, creating a surveillance environment within the transport mode.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to keep your data stored for up to 7 years or longer if Uber cites legal or security reasons.

“We retain your data: ...for 7 years from collection (unless you first delete your Uber account) if necessary for purposes of Uber’s tax, insurance, legal or regulatory requirements; subject to Uber’s legitimate interests in defending against, or asserting, legal claims;”

What that means: Even after deleting your account, significant amounts of your data remain in Uber's systems for years.

Data is kept for a long statutory period and potentially longer if Uber claims 'legitimate interests' in legal disputes.

Medium cost

Data sold or shared with third parties

You are agreeing to have your usage data and enriched demographics shared with data resellers and marketers.

“Marketing partners, advertisers, and service providers. This includes banks in connection with cash back programs,* and data resellers.* ... Enrichment data such as demographics (age range, household income range, gender)... general purchasing behavior, viewing preferences and streaming habits.*”

What that means: Your purchasing behavior and demographic profile are sold or shared with brokers to enrich your commercial profile.

Uber shares user data with data resellers and enrichment partners who aggregate profiles including income and lifestyle habits for commercial use.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that data retention survives account deletion for safety, fraud, and legal defense purposes.

“Following an account deletion request, we delete your account and data, except as necessary for purposes of safety, security, fraud prevention or compliance with legal requirements... For example, if you are banned from Uber’s services because of serious fraudulent or unsafe behavior, Uber will retain your data after an account deletion request to prevent you from re-obtaining access to Uber’s platform.”

What that means: Your data is not truly deleted if Uber suspects fraud or needs it for future liability defense.

Deletion is incomplete; data is preserved indefinitely under broad categories like 'safety,' 'security,' and 'fraud prevention.'

Medium cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that this privacy notice governs your use of Uber Freight, TrendyolGo, and Careem Rides.

“This notice applies when you use Uber’s apps or websites to request or receive products or services, including rides or deliveries. ... except when you use Uber Freight, TrendyolGo App/website or Careem Rides.”

What that means: Using any of Uber's connected apps triggers the same data collection rules in this document.

The policy explicitly covers multiple branded applications (Freight, TrendyolGo, Careem) under this single privacy framework.
