In short

  • This agreement lets you use Facebook and related apps in exchange for personalized advertising.
  • You grant Meta a broad license to use your content and allow them to track your activity across their services and third-party sites.
  • If disputes arise, you may lose the right to a jury trial or class action, depending on your status.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to give Meta a worldwide, sublicensable license to use your photos, videos, and other content.

    This product

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  2. 02

You are agreeing that Meta can show you ads based on your personal data and activity.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing to resolve certain disputes exclusively in California courts.

    This product

“In all other cases... you and Meta agree that any such claim, cause of action or dispute must be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California or a state court located in San Mateo County.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Meta a broad, sublicensable license to use your content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You give up control over how your creative work is used or distributed beyond the app.

Meta takes a very broad legal right to use, change, and share your posts and media with anyone, including partners.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta track your activity on and off their products for ad targeting.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your browsing and usage patterns outside of Facebook are collected to build a profile for advertisers.

The company tracks your behavior not just inside Facebook but also on other websites and apps linked to its ad network.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta provides its services "as is" without guarantees of safety or performance.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and to the extent permissible by law, we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free...”

What that means: If something goes wrong or causes losses, you have limited legal recourse to recover damages.

The service comes with no warranties, and Meta limits its financial liability to the maximum extent allowed by law.

Medium cost

Jury trial or court access waived

You are agreeing to resolve certain disputes in specific US courts rather than local ones.

“In all other cases, and for any claim, cause of action, or dispute that Meta files against you, you and Meta agree that any such claim, cause of action or dispute must be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California”

What that means: You may be forced to litigate in California under US laws rather than in your home country’s courts.

Non-consumers and Meta-initiated suits must go to specific US courts, often bypassing local jury options available elsewhere.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process that includes long backup retention periods.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your deleted data persists in backups for weeks, delaying complete privacy.

Even after you delete content, it remains in backup systems for an extended period before being fully erased.
