In short

  • These terms cover your access to Facebook and other Meta services.
  • They state that you pay with your data for personalized ads instead of money.
  • They also outline how Meta can change the rules, manage your account, and limit its own legal responsibility.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can show you personalized ads based on your personal data.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing that Meta is not liable for damages beyond $100 or what you have paid them.

    This product

“Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Meta Products will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta a wide-ranging, transferable license to use and modify your content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose exclusive control over your photos and videos, as Meta can let others use or alter them.

Meta takes a very broad license to your content. It allows them to sub-license this rights to others, modify your work, and use it worldwide without paying you.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta will not pay for most types of financial or data losses you suffer.

“our liability shall be limited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, and under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data, or consequential, special, indirect, exemplary, punitive, or incidental damages”

What that means: If Meta causes you significant financial loss or data loss, you likely cannot recover those costs from them.

Meta limits its financial responsibility for any problems you face. They refuse to pay for lost data, profits, or other indirect costs.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta track your activity to show you personalized advertisements.

“We collect and use your personal data in order to provide the services described above to you... such as information about your activity and interests, to show you personalized ads and sponsored content”

What that means: Your online behavior and interests are tracked to target ads at you.

Meta uses your activity data across the product to build an ad profile. While they say they do not sell your direct identity, they use detailed behavioral data for advertising.

Medium cost

Third parties handle data you submit

You are agreeing to have your data shared across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

“your experience is consistent and seamless across the different Meta Company Products... For example, we use data about the people you engage with on Facebook to make it easier for you to connect with them on Instagram or Messenger”

What that means: Your actions on one Meta app affect your experience and profile on all other Meta apps.

Your data moves freely between Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other Meta companies to link your profiles and behaviors.

Lower cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by any future changes to the terms if you keep using the service.

“Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules can change while you are using the app, and you must leave to avoid accepting them.

Meta can change the terms at any time. If you keep using the service, you accept the new changes automatically.
