What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can use your personal data to show you personalized ads.

    This product

“We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to give Meta a worldwide, sublicensable license to host and distribute your content.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that any disputes will be resolved exclusively in California courts.

    This product

“any claim, cause of action, or dispute between us... shall be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California or a state court located in San Mateo County.”
  4. 04

You are agreeing that Meta’s liability is limited to $100 or the amount you paid them in the past twelve months.

    This product

“Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms... will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta a wide license to use your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You give up significant control over how your photos and videos are used by Meta and its partners.

The document grants Meta a very broad license to use, modify, and sublicense your content globally, even if you delete the content from your profile view (though they stop hosting it).

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to accept limited liability from Meta.

“Our Products... are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... Our aggregate liability... will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If something goes wrong, you likely cannot recover significant losses because their liability is capped.

Meta provides services without warranties and limits its financial liability for any damages to a small fixed amount or what you have paid.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to having your off-platform activity tracked for ad targeting.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior outside of Facebook is tracked and used to target you with advertising.

Meta collects data from your activity both on and off their products to tailor the ads and feed you see.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future updates to these terms.

“we may need to update these Terms from time to time... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules can change without you explicitly clicking 'agree' again each time; staying on the platform means you follow the new rules.

Meta can change the terms at any time, and your continued use of the service counts as acceptance of those changes.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to delayed deletion of your data.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data is not instantly gone when you ask for deletion; it persists in backups for a period.

Even after you request deletion, copies of your data remain in backup systems for up to 90 additional days.
