In short

  • This document sets the rules for using Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta products.
  • By continuing to use these services, you accept that Meta uses your personal data to show you personalized ads.
  • It also grants Meta broad rights to use your content and limits what they are responsible for if things go wrong.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to provide personalized ads by allowing Meta to use your personal data to determine which ads to show you.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days total for your data to be fully purged from all systems.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data stays accessible to the company long after you ask them to remove it.

When you request to delete your account or content, it does not disappear instantly. The terms allow for a significant delay where data remains on backup servers.

Lower cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that continued use of the app means you accept their new rule changes.

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules governing your account can change while you are still using the service.

Meta can change these rules themselves. They promise a 30-day notice, but you are only bound if you keep using the product.

If these terms already apply to you

Keep this list. Fineprint cannot undo or cancel something you already agreed to at the company.

We cannot see Agree on their site. With Premium, tap “I accepted these terms” if you already agreed to what Meta asks.
