In short

  • This document governs your use of Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta Products.
  • It allows Meta to show you personalized ads using your data without selling your personal information directly.
  • You must accept these terms, including content licenses and liability limits, to continue using the services.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can show you personalized ads based on your data.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to grant Meta a broad license to use and distribute your content.

    This product

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute... your content”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that disputes will be resolved in U.S. District Court or San Mateo County state courts.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“any claim, cause of action, or dispute between us that arises out of or relates to these Terms... shall be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California or a state court located in San Mateo County.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta permission to use, share, and modify the content you upload.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can use and share your posts and photos widely, even after you post them.

The terms grant Meta a very wide license to use, modify, and share your content with others or service providers.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta is not responsible for most damages and caps its liability at $100.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data... Our aggregate liability... will not exceed the greater of $100”

What that means: If something goes wrong or you lose data, you have little recourse and limited compensation.

The service is provided without warranties, and Meta’s financial responsibility for any issues is capped at $100.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delay where deleted content stays in backup systems for up to 90 days.

“it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your deleted data remains accessible to Meta for several months after deletion requests.

Even after you delete content or close your account, Meta keeps it in backup systems for up to 90 days longer.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that your data may be kept longer than usual for legal or safety investigations.

“where immediate deletion would restrict our ability to: investigate or identify illegal activity... comply with legal obligations... or comply with a request of a judicial or administrative authority”

What that means: Your data may be kept indefinitely if Meta believes it is legally required for safety or compliance.

Meta can keep your content beyond the standard deletion period if needed for legal investigations or compliance.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta track your behavior across their products and outside sites to tailor ads and feeds.

“We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Meta tracks your activity both inside and outside their apps to build a profile of your interests.

Meta collects data from your activity on their platforms and 'on and off' their products to customize what you see.
