In short

  • These terms let Meta use your personal data to show you personalized ads and share information across its family of apps like Instagram and Messenger.
  • The agreement gives Meta a broad, perpetual license to use the photos and videos you upload, while limiting their legal responsibility if things go wrong.
  • You accept that disputes must be resolved in California courts and that deleting your account takes up to 90 days to fully remove data from backups.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can use your personal data to determine which personalized ads to show you.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to grant Meta a wide-ranging license to host, copy, and share the content you create.

    This product

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  3. 03

You are agreeing to resolve any legal disputes exclusively in California courts under California law.

    This product

“any claim, cause of action, or dispute between us ... shall be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta and its partners broad, worldwide rights to use, modify, and share your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta and its partners can reuse or republish your posts and media without further permission or payment.

The Terms grant Meta extensive rights to your user-generated content, allowing it to be copied, modified, displayed, and sublicensed to other entities globally.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta has limited legal liability for service failures and disclaims all warranties regarding performance or security.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," ... we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES ... Our aggregate liability ... will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If the service fails or causes issues, you have little legal recourse for damages beyond a nominal fee.

The document provides services on an 'as-is' basis with no guarantees of safety or accuracy, and caps the company's total financial liability at a very low threshold.

High cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where content may remain in backups for up to 180 days total.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process ... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your private information remains accessible internally for weeks or months even after you request removal.

Data persists for significant periods after deletion requests due to backup cycles and technical limitations, preventing immediate erasure.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that your data and activity can be shared across different Meta Companies and financial services.

“We share data across Meta Companies when we detect misuse ... For example, we share information with Meta Companies that provide financial products and services...”

What that means: Activity and data collected on one platform can be shared across the entire Meta ecosystem of companies.

The terms explicitly allow data sharing among all Meta-owned platforms, including financial services and sister brands, not just Facebook.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that continuing to use the service after updates means you accept the new Terms automatically.

“Unless otherwise required by law, we will notify you before we make changes to these Terms ... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: New rules apply to your account as soon as they are posted, without requiring a fresh explicit click.

While notice is promised, continued use serves as acceptance of new terms, meaning you automatically agree to changes if you keep logging in.
