In short

  • This document governs your use of Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta services.

  • The agreement also covers broad licenses for your content, specific deletion timelines, and liability limits.

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta use, copy, and share your content widely under a permissive license.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You give Meta extensive rights to use, copy, and share your photos, videos, and posts with others and partners.

The terms grant Meta a broad, perpetual, and sublicensable right to use your content across all Meta products and service providers.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to accept the service 'as is' with no warranties from Meta.

“Our Products, however, are provided 'as is,' and to the extent permissible by law, we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES”

What that means: If the service fails or causes harm, Meta’s financial responsibility to you is heavily restricted.

Meta disclaims all warranties regarding the safety, security, or functionality of the service, limiting its liability significantly.

High cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing that children under 13 are prohibited from creating accounts.

“When people stand behind their opinions and actions, our community is safer and more accountable. For this reason, you must: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Users under 13 cannot legally use the service under these terms.

The terms explicitly bar users under 13, complying with COPPA requirements, but this confirms the collection of data is structured around age thresholds.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta track your data to show you personalized ads.

“we use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you. We don’t sell your personal data to advertisers... Instead, advertisers can tell us things like the kind of audience they want to see their ads”

What that means: Your online behavior and interests are tracked to serve targeted advertising.

Meta uses your activity and interests to personalize ads. While they state they do not sell direct personal data to advertisers, they do track behavior to build profiles for targeting.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days total for full data removal from live and backup systems.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains visible or accessible for up to six months after you request deletion.

Account and content deletion is not immediate. There are significant delays in both the primary system and backup systems, exceeding typical immediate deletion expectations.

Lower cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future updates to the terms if you keep using the service.

“We will notify you (for example, by email or through our Products) at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules governing your use can change, and staying on the platform means you accept the new rules.

Meta can change the terms with 30 days' notice. Continued use binds you to the new terms, giving you little choice but to accept changes or leave.
