In short

  • These Terms govern your access to Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta Products.
  • You authorize Meta to show you personalized ads using your personal data and grant them a broad license to use your content.
  • The agreement limits Meta's liability for service issues and restricts the legal venues available if disputes arise.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to let Meta show you personalized ads based on your personal data, activity, and interests across their products and off their properties.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to give Meta a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of any content you upload.

    This product

“when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta broad permission to copy, modify, and share your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Your photos and videos can be used, modified, or shared by Meta or its partners under this broad license.

Meta takes a perpetual, sublicensable, and worldwide license to user content. This allows them to copy, modify, and share content broadly, including with partners, beyond what is strictly necessary to just display it to friends.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to limit Meta’s liability for any damages to a maximum of $100.

“We cannot predict when issues might arise with our Products. Accordingly, our liability shall be limited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law... Our aggregate liability... will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If Meta’s service fails, leaks your data, or causes you harm, you generally cannot recover significant damages from them.

Meta disclaims all warranties and caps its financial liability for any damages, whether caused by negligence or otherwise, at a very low flat fee ($100) since most users pay nothing.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow Meta to track your activity on and off their sites to personalize your experience.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your online behavior outside of Facebook is monitored and used to customize your feed and ads.

The document explicitly states that Meta tracks user activity both on and off their platforms to build profiles for ad targeting and service personalization.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that your data may remain in backup systems for up to 90 days after you delete your account.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains accessible within Meta's internal backup systems for several months after you request deletion.

Account deletion does not result in immediate erasure. Meta keeps data in backup systems for up to 90 additional days after the initial deletion process begins.
