In short

  • These terms govern your use of Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta services by allowing them to show you personalized ads.
  • They give Meta broad rights to use, copy, and share the content you upload.
  • They also limit their liability for service issues and restrict where you can sue if a dispute arises.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to let Meta use your photos, videos, and posts to provide its services and improve them.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“Specifically, when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to pay for these services indirectly by watching targeted advertisements.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that Meta’s total financial responsibility for any issues is very limited.

    This product

“Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Meta Products will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta a broad, perpetual license to use and share your content.

What that means: Meta can share your photos and videos with partners or advertisers without asking you again.

The agreement grants Meta a wide-ranging, sub-licensable right to use and share user content beyond what is strictly necessary to operate the app.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta is not responsible for most damages and caps its liability at $100.

“Our Products, however, are provided 'as is,' and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Meta Products will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If the service fails or causes harm, you have very little legal recourse for compensation.

The company explicitly denies warranties and caps its financial liability at a nominal amount.

High cost

Jury trial or court access waived

You are agreeing to resolve disputes exclusively in California courts.

“You and Meta each agree that any claim, cause of action, or dispute between us that arises out of or relates to these Terms or your access or use of the Meta Products shall be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California or a state court located in San Mateo County.”

What that means: You cannot easily sue Meta in your local court; you must travel to or litigate in Northern California.

Users must bring disputes in specific California courts, which can deter participation in public litigation.

High cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing that this service is restricted to users aged 13 and older.

“You cannot use Facebook if: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Children under 13 are prohibited from using the service entirely.

The terms explicitly bar users under 13, aligning with COPPA but restricting access for children.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days for all traces of your content to be fully purged from Meta's servers.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your deleted content remains accessible in backend systems for several months after you request deletion.

Data removal is delayed significantly due to technical limitations in backup systems.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to having your activity data used to personalize ads shown to you.

“We use your personal data, such as information about your activity and interests, to show you personalized ads and sponsored content that may be more relevant to you.”

What that means: Your online behavior is monitored to target you with specific advertisements.

User activity and interests are tracked to build profiles for advertising purposes.
