What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to give Meta a wide, lasting right to store, copy, and share your content.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to let Meta update the rules and bind you if you keep using the service.

    This product

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes... unless changes are required by law. Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”
  3. 03

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta and its partners use your content freely and permanently.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose control over how your photos and posts are used or shared by partners.

Meta takes a very broad license that lets them sell, sublicense, or change your content. The license lasts as long as others use your content under this rule, even after you delete it from your profile.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to cross-site tracking for ad targeting.

“we use data about the connections you make... and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your private habits outside Facebook are used to influence what you see.

They track what you do outside their apps to build a profile on you. This allows them to serve targeted ads based on your entire online behavior.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed and incomplete deletion process for your data.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data lingers on servers long after you think it is gone.

Deletion is not instant. Your data remains in active systems for 90 days and in offline backups for another 90 days. It also stays if others have used it.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to accept changes based on their own judgment.

“We will only make any changes if the provisions are no longer appropriate or if they are incomplete... We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes... unless changes are required by law.”

What that means: The rules can change without you having time to review or quit.

They can change the terms whenever they want if they claim it is for safety or legal reasons, skipping the 30-day notice period.

Medium cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to a unified data environment across multiple brands.

“except where we expressly state that separate terms (and not these) apply. (For example, your use of Instagram is subject to the Instagram Terms of Use)... share data across Meta Companies”

What that means: Your activity on one app impacts your privacy settings and ads on all other apps.

While Instagram has its own terms, data flows freely between all Meta brands. Using one service affects your experience and data privacy across the whole ecosystem.
