In short

  • These Terms govern your use of Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta products.
  • You allow Meta to collect data to show you personalized ads and keep them from suing you for most issues.
  • The company can update these rules with 30 days' notice if you want to keep using the service.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that we can show you personalized ads based on your personal data.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to grant a broad license for content you post to others within Meta's network.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content... such as Meta Products or service providers that support those products and services.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that disputes must be resolved in California courts unless local law prevents this.

    This product

“In all other cases... you and Meta agree that any such claim, cause of action or dispute must be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California...”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to accept the service "as is" with no guarantee of safety or function.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and to the extent permissible by law, we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES...”

What that means: You have limited legal recourse if the service fails or causes harm due to its unreliability.

Meta provides its services without any warranty of safety, security, or function, effectively shifting the risk of errors or failures onto the user.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to tracking across sites and apps outside the product to influence your feed.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your private activities outside of Meta apps are monitored and combined with your social graph.

The company tracks activity both on and off its platforms to build a detailed profile for ad targeting.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to data sharing and integrated experiences across Meta's entire family of apps.

“We design our systems so that your experience is consistent and seamless across the different Meta Company Products that you use. For example, we use data about the people you engage with on Facebook to make it easier for you to connect with them on Instagram or Messenger”

What that means: Actions on one platform directly impact your experience and visibility on other sister brands.

The agreement explicitly links behavior across distinct branded services like Instagram and Messenger.

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta freely use, modify, and sub-license your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license... to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can commercialize or share your content with partners without paying you or asking further permission.

Users give Meta extensive rights to their creative work, including the ability to sublicense it to third parties for free.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future updates to these terms if you keep using the platform.

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: Your obligations and rights under the contract can change without your explicit renewed consent.

Meta can change the terms of service and bind you to the new rules simply by continuing to use the product after providing 30 days' notice.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delay in the complete removal of your content and account data.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains accessible to the company for a significant time even after you request its removal.

Account and content deletion is not immediate; it involves a waiting period and persists in backup systems for months.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to keep data visible if others utilize the license you granted them.

“Content will not be deleted within 90 days... where your content has been used by others in accordance with this license and they have not deleted it”

What that means: You cannot fully control when your data is erased if others have engaged with it.

Data is retained indefinitely if other users interact with it according to the license granted by the uploader.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing to adhere to the minimum age requirement of 13 years old.

“You cannot use Facebook if: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Children under 13 are barred from using the core service.

The document clearly sets an age limit of 13, preventing children under that age from creating accounts.
