In short

  • These Terms govern your use of Facebook and other Meta products.
  • You accept that we show you ads based on your data and have broad rights to use the content you post.
  • The agreement also sets rules for deleting accounts, resolving disputes in specific courts, and limits our liability.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that we can show you personalized ads using your personal data.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to grant us a worldwide, sublicensable license to use, copy, and distribute your content.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that account deletion may take up to 90 days and content might remain in backups longer.

    This product

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta use, share, and change your content freely across their services.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings).”

What that means: You lose some control over how your photos and videos are used by Meta and its partners.

Meta takes a broad license to your posts, allowing them to sublicense and modify your work globally, even though they claim it ends upon deletion.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to hold Meta responsible only if legally required, accepting most risks yourself.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," ... DISCLAIMER ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data, or consequential, special, indirect, exemplary, punitive, or incidental damages”

What that means: If something goes wrong or you lose data, you likely cannot sue Meta for compensation.

Meta provides its services without guarantees of safety or function and explicitly waives liability for most types of damages, including loss of data.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to have your activity monitored for ad targeting purposes.

“We use your personal data, such as information about your activity and interests, to show you personalized ads and sponsored content that may be more relevant to you.”

What that means: Your online behavior is analyzed to target you with specific advertisements.

The terms explicitly state that Meta uses your activity and interests data to personalize advertising across its platforms.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that deletion is delayed and incomplete until all backups are processed.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process or receive a content deletion request... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data stays on Meta's servers for up to six months after you ask to leave.

Deleting your account or posts does not happen instantly. Data persists in active systems for 90 days and in backup archives for an additional 90 days.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing that users must be at least 13 years old to access the service.

“You cannot use Facebook if: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Young children are not allowed to create accounts.

The document clearly bars children under 13 from using the service.
