What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta use, modify, and share your content broadly to operate and improve their services.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings).”

What that means: Meta can store, share, modify, and derive new works from your uploaded content even after you delete it from your profile, within technical limits.

Meta requires a broad, perpetual, and sublicensable license to any content you post or upload, including photos and videos. This license extends globally and allows them to modify or create derivatives of your work without additional permission or payment.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta provides services "as is" without warranty and accepts no liability for security breaches or user misconduct.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... we are not responsible for their actions or conduct... or any content they share”

What that means: If the service fails, leaks data, or exposes you to harmful content, you have no contractual recourse against Meta for damages.

Meta disclaims all warranties regarding security, safety, or functionality. They also deny responsibility for user-generated content or other users' behavior, shifting the risk of harm or loss to you.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to the collection of your data from activities on and off Meta's products to personalize ads and experiences.

“We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior on third-party websites and apps is collected and used to target ads and customize your feed on Meta products.

Meta tracks your activity both on their platform and on external sites ('off our Products') to build a profile for personalization and advertising.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that safety and misuse detection data may be shared across different Meta Company Products.

“These Terms... govern your access and use of Facebook, Messenger, and the other products, websites, features, apps, services, technologies, and software we offer... except where we expressly state that separate terms... apply. (For example, your use of Instagram is subject to the Instagram Terms of Use)”

What that means: Data and safety policies are shared across the ecosystem of Meta companies, even if specific UI terms differ.

While this document covers 'Meta Products', it explicitly notes that distinct products like Instagram have separate terms. However, the overarching 'Meta Products' definition often bundles services together for operational purposes, such as sharing safety data across 'Meta Companies'.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to a delay in data deletion where content stays in backups and disaster recovery systems for up to 180 days total.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data persists on servers for several months after you request its removal, limiting your control over its availability.

The document explicitly states that deletion is not immediate. Content remains visible for up to 30 days in trash and takes up to 90 days to remove from active systems, plus an additional 90 days from backups.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that deleting your account will not remove content shared in albums or pages administered by you.

“Account deletion does not automatically delete content that you post as an admin of a page or content that you create collectively with other users, such as photos in Shared Albums which may continue to be visible to other album members.”

What that means: Deleting your account may not fully erase your presence from shared spaces or pages you administer.

Closing your personal account does not wipe all associated data. Content you shared with others or managed as an admin may remain visible to those parties even if your specific account is deleted.
