In short

  • This document sets the rules for using Facebook and other Meta services.
  • It states that you do not pay money to use the apps, but instead provide your personal data so the company can show you targeted ads.
  • You also grant Meta broad rights to use, copy, and share the content you upload.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to let Meta use your personal information to show you personalized advertisements across its products and off-platform sites.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to give Meta a permanent right to copy, modify, and share any photos or videos you post, even after you delete them from your account.

    This product

“This license will end when your content is deleted from our systems... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that Meta can change these terms with 30 days' notice, and if you disagree, you must delete your account.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“We will notify you (for example, by email or through our Products) at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... if you do not agree to our updated Terms, or wish to terminate your agreement to this contract, you can delete your account at any time”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Meta a broad, sublicensable license to your content that persists during and immediately after deletion processes.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content... This license will end when your content is deleted from our systems.”

What that means: Meta retains legal permission to keep and use your uploaded media long after you have removed it from your profile.

The terms grant Meta a very wide license to use user content, including the right to sublicense it to others. Although the license technically ends when content is deleted, the text notes significant delays in actual deletion.

High cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where your data remains on backup servers for up to 180 days.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: You cannot instantly erase your history, as copies remain accessible to internal systems for months.

Account and content deletion is not immediate. The document explicitly allows for data to remain in backup systems for up to 180 days total in some scenarios.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow Meta to track your activity on third-party sites and apps to customize your feed and ads.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your activity on websites and apps not owned by Meta is collected and used to target advertisements.

The terms state that Meta uses data from outside its own apps ("on and off our Products") to track users and build profiles for ad targeting.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta provides its services 'as is' without warranties and limits its liability for your losses.

“Our Products, however, are provided 'as is,' ... we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data...”

What that means: If Meta’s service fails or leaks data, you generally cannot sue for financial losses or data recovery costs.

Meta provides its services without guarantees of safety or accuracy and waives liability for most types of damages, including loss of data.

High cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing that only users aged 13 or older are eligible to use the service.

“You cannot use Facebook if: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Users under 13 are prohibited from creating accounts.

The terms explicitly bar users under 13, confirming compliance with COPPA age restrictions while implicitly acknowledging children as a demographic.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that Meta may ignore deletion requests to preserve data for investigations or legal obligations.

“where immediate deletion would restrict our ability to: investigate or identify illegal activity or violations of our terms and policies... comply with legal obligations for the preservation of evidence...”

What that means: Your request to delete data may be ignored indefinitely if Meta claims it needs to keep it for safety or legal reasons.

Meta can override deletion requests to preserve data for security investigations, legal compliance, or evidence preservation.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that continuing to use the service binds you to any updated terms posted by Meta.

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You must regularly check for updates, as your continued usage binds you to new terms you may not have actively reviewed.

Meta can update the terms unilaterally. Continued use of the service after notice constitutes acceptance of the new rules.

Lower cost

Location or sensitive-data over-collection

You are agreeing to share relevant personal information with Meta's financial subsidiaries for safety and legal compliance.

“we share information with Meta Companies that provide financial products and services to help them promote safety, security and integrity and comply with applicable law.”

What that means: Financial or related personal data may be shared with Meta’s financial arms for security and compliance.

The document mentions sharing data with companies providing financial products, implying financial data collection and sharing, though specific sensitive categories like biometrics are not detailed here.
