In short

  • You also accept that Meta can change these terms with notice and limit its liability for service issues.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can get permission from you to use your photos, videos, and other content it shares or uploads.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license”
  2. 02

You are agreeing that Meta can show you ads that are tailored to your interests using your personal data.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta a permanent, global, and transferable license to use your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can legally share, alter, or let other companies use your uploaded media without your direct approval.

The document grants Meta a wide-ranging license that includes transferring, sublicensing, and modifying user content globally without payment.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to waive most claims against Meta for damages or service disruptions.

“Our Products... are provided "as is," ... DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES ... our liability shall be limited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.”

What that means: If services fail or cause data loss, Meta accepts minimal legal responsibility, placing the risk on the user.

Meta disclaims all warranties and limits its liability for damages, leaving users without recourse for many potential service failures.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that your deleted content may remain in backup systems for up to 90 days.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data persists longer than the visible deletion, preventing complete immediate erasure from all systems.

Even after a request to delete content, Meta retains copies in backup systems for up to 90 additional days.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that your data remains stored if others continue to use it according to the license terms.

“Content will not be deleted within 90 days of the account deletion or content deletion process beginning in the following situations: ... where your content has been used by others in accordance with this license and they have not deleted it”

What that means: Your data stays on file indefinitely if others interact with it, even after you try to delete it.

Retention of content continues if other users have engaged with it under the granted license, extending storage beyond standard deletion windows.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future changes to the terms upon continued use.

“We will notify you ... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms ... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You are automatically bound by new rules if you keep using the service, even if you disagree with the changes.

Meta can modify terms unilaterally with 30 days' notice, and continued use constitutes acceptance of the new terms.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to have your data from outside Meta used for ad targeting.

“We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you. We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your activity across multiple sites and apps is tracked and utilized to build a detailed profile for advertising purposes.

The terms explicitly state that data from on and off their products is used to tailor experiences and ads.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing to verify that you are at least 13 years old to use the service.

“You cannot use Facebook if: You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Users under 13 are prohibited from creating accounts, reducing direct data collection risks for this group.

The terms clearly state an age restriction, limiting collection from children under 13.
