What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to a broad, perpetual license that lets Meta reuse and share your content freely.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can legally share, modify, or resell your photos and videos without asking you again or paying you.

The terms grant a permanent, sublicensable right to your creative work. This license allows Meta to use your content in ways beyond just running the platform, including transferring those rights to others.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to hold Meta harmless and accept zero compensation for damages caused by service defects.

“we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... DISCLAIMER OF ALL WARRANTIES... under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data, or consequential... damages”

What that means: If the platform fails or leaks data, you likely have no legal recourse to recover your losses.

Meta disclaims all warranties and caps its financial liability, meaning you cannot sue for significant losses resulting from platform failures or security breaches.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days for your data to be completely erased from all systems.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process or receive a content deletion request... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains recoverable or visible to internal systems for six months after you ask to leave.

Account deletion is delayed, requiring up to 180 days total to fully erase data from live servers and backups.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to have your off-platform activity collected and used for advertising purposes.

“We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Meta tracks your behavior across the web to determine which ads to show you.

The terms explicitly state that data usage extends to activity occurring off their products to build user profiles for ad targeting.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by updated terms simply by keeping your account active.

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You are forced to accept new rules by simply continuing to browse unless you actively delete your account.

Changes become binding upon continued use. While there is a notice period, failure to delete the account results in automatic acceptance.

Medium cost

Third parties handle data you submit

You are agreeing to let third-party service providers view and handle your shared content.

“This means, for example, that if you share a photo on Facebook, you give us permission to... share it with others... such as Meta Products or service providers that support those products and services.”

What that means: Your content is processed by external companies hired by Meta.

Third-party vendors and service providers handle the content you upload to support the platform's operation.
