High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Google a worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to use your content for operating, improving, promoting, and developing its services.

“This license allows Google to: host, reproduce, distribute, communicate, and use your content — for example, to save your content on our systems and make it accessible from anywhere you go. publish, publicly perform, or publicly display your content, if you’ve made it visible to others. modify and create derivative works based on your content, such as reformatting or translating it. sublicense these rights to: other users to allow the services to work as designed... our contractors who’ve signed agreements with us that are consistent with these terms, only for the limited purposes described in the Purpose section below”

What that means: Your content can be used by Google, its contractors, and other users in various ways, potentially without your specific awareness of each use.

Google obtains a broad, worldwide license to your content, allowing them to host, reproduce, distribute, modify, and sublicense it. This covers many uses beyond merely providing the core service.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Google provides its services 'as is' without any guarantees, and it is not responsible if the services do not meet your expectations or needs.

“TO THE EXTENT ALLOWED BY APPLICABLE LAW, WE PROVIDE OUR SERVICES “AS IS” WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. FOR EXAMPLE, WE DON’T MAKE ANY WARRANTIES ABOUT THE CONTENT OR FEATURES OF THE SERVICES, INCLUDING THEIR ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, OR ABILITY TO MEET YOUR NEEDS.”

What that means: If Google's services do not work as expected, contain errors, or fail to meet your specific needs, Google is generally not liable for these shortcomings.

Google offers its services 'as is,' meaning they make no promises about their suitability, reliability, or accuracy. This significantly limits their responsibility for any problems you might encounter.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Google's liability for any issues arising from its services is heavily restricted, excluding many types of losses and capping total damages at $200 or the last 12 months of fees.

“To the extent allowed by applicable law: Google is liable only for its breaches of these terms or applicable service-specific additional terms. Google isn’t liable for: loss of profits, revenues, business opportunities, goodwill, or anticipated savings. indirect or consequential losses. punitive damages. Google’s total liability arising out of or relating to these terms is limited to the greater of (1) $200 or (2) the fees paid to use the relevant services in the 12 months before the dispute”

What that means: If Google's services cause you financial or other indirect harm, you will likely not be able to recover these losses from Google, and any recoverable damages are capped.

Google severely limits its financial liability for damages, excluding various types of losses and capping total liability at a very low amount ($200 or 12 months of fees).

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that these terms apply broadly to nearly all Google products and services, including apps, websites, platforms, and physical devices.

“We provide a broad range of services that are subject to these terms, including: apps and sites (like Search and Maps); platforms (like Google Shopping); integrated services (like Maps embedded in other companies’ apps or sites); devices (like Google Nest and Pixel)... The Google services that are subject to these terms are the products and services listed at https://policies.google.com/terms/service-specific, including: apps and sites (like Search and Maps); platforms (like Google Shopping); integrated services (like Maps embedded in other companies’ apps or sites); devices and other goods (like Google Nest)”

What that means: By agreeing to these terms for one Google service, you are agreeing to them for virtually every Google product or service you use.

These terms apply to a very wide range of Google products and services, including apps, websites, platforms, integrated services, and physical devices.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing, if you are a business user or organization, to cover Google's legal costs and liabilities if your use of their services leads to third-party legal claims.

“If you’re a business user or organization: To the extent allowed by applicable law, you’ll indemnify Google and its directors, officers, employees, and contractors for any third-party legal proceedings (including actions by government authorities) arising out of or relating to your unlawful use of the services or violation of these terms or service-specific additional terms. This indemnity covers any liability or expense arising from claims, losses, damages, judgments, fines, litigation costs, and legal fees.”

What that means: Businesses or organizations could face significant financial burden if their use of Google services leads to legal action against Google.

If you use Google services as a business or organization, you commit to protect Google from legal claims, including legal fees and damages, that arise from your unlawful use or breach of terms.

Medium cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing that Google can analyze your content, including private data, to personalize ads and develop new technologies and services.

“This includes using automated systems and algorithms to analyze your content: ... to customize our services for you, such as providing recommendations and personalized search results, content, and ads (which you can change or turn off in Ads Settings) ... developing new technologies and services for Google consistent with these terms”

What that means: Your content can be automatically processed to show you targeted advertisements and to train Google's AI models or create new features.

Google analyzes your content using automated systems to personalize ads and develop new technologies. This analysis occurs as content is sent, received, and stored.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that your content may remain accessible even after deletion if it was shared with others or indexed by third-party services.

“This license lasts for as long as your content is protected by intellectual property rights. If you remove from our services any content that’s covered by this license, then our systems will stop making that content publicly available in a reasonable amount of time. There are two exceptions: If you already shared your content with others before removing it. ... If you make your content available through other companies’ services, it’s possible that search engines, including Google Search, will continue to find and display your content as part of their search results.”

What that means: Content you delete might persist elsewhere, beyond your control, if it was previously shared or made available outside Google's direct services.

Even after you remove content, copies shared with others or indexed by search engines may remain available and outside your control. The license itself lasts indefinitely, as long as intellectual property rights exist.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that Google can change these terms at any time, possibly without advance notice for certain situations, and your continued use means you accept the new terms.

“If we materially change these terms or service-specific additional terms, we’ll provide you with reasonable advance notice and the opportunity to review the changes, except (1) when we launch a new service or feature, or (2) in urgent situations, such as preventing ongoing abuse or responding to legal requirements. If you don’t agree to the new terms, you should remove your content and stop using the services.”

What that means: The rules governing your use of Google services can change at any time, and you may not always receive advance notice for all changes.

Google can change its terms at any time, even without advance notice in urgent situations or when launching new features. You must accept these new terms or stop using the services.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that Google can unilaterally suspend or terminate your access to services or delete your account for reasons such as violating terms or causing harm.

“Without limiting any of our other rights, Google may suspend or terminate your access to the services or delete your Google Account if any of these things happen: you materially or repeatedly breach these terms, service-specific additional terms, or policies; we’re required to do so to comply with a legal requirement or a court order; your conduct causes harm or liability to a user, third party, or Google”

What that means: Your access to Google services and associated data can be removed by Google without your consent if they determine you've violated their terms or other conditions.

Google can suspend or terminate your access or delete your account for various reasons, including breaches of terms, legal requirements, or conduct causing harm to others or Google.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing to be fully responsible for your child's actions and adherence to these terms if you allow them to use Google services.

“If you’re under the age required to manage your own Google Account, you must have your parent or legal guardian’s permission to use a Google Account... If you’re a parent or legal guardian, and you allow your child to use the services, then these terms apply to you and you’re responsible for your child’s activity on the services.”

What that means: Parents are legally responsible for their children's actions and compliance with these terms when using Google services.

Google requires parental permission for minors and places full responsibility for the child's activity on the parent or guardian.
