What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta broad permissions to use your content in ways that extend beyond simply displaying it.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose control over how your photos and videos are used, shared, or modified by Meta and its partners.

The terms grant Meta extensive rights to your content, including the ability to sublicense it to others and create derivative works. This license persists even if you delete your account, until the content is deleted from systems.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta combine your activity across different apps to build a detailed profile of your interests.

“we use data about the people you engage with on Facebook to make it easier for you to connect with them on Instagram or Messenger”

What that means: Your activity on one app influences what you see on another, creating a continuous tracking experience across Meta's ecosystem.

Meta shares data across its family of apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger) to personalize experiences and advertisements. This creates a unified profile of your interests and connections.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that these terms apply to all Meta products you use, unless a specific separate agreement states otherwise.

“These Terms ... govern your access and use of Facebook, Messenger, and the other products, websites, features, apps, services, technologies, and software we offer ... except where we expressly state that separate terms ... apply. (For example, your use of Instagram is subject to the Instagram Terms of Use).”

What that means: Your actions on various Meta services are governed by this single agreement, extending your obligations far beyond just Facebook.

The main terms cover a vast array of Meta products. While some like Instagram have separate terms, many other features and services fall under this umbrella, binding you to these rules across multiple platforms.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a deletion process that spans several months and may retain data longer if required for legal or technical reasons.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data is not immediately gone; it stays visible and accessible for significant periods after you request deletion.

Data remains accessible during an active deletion request and for two additional months during backup purging. Data may also remain if used by others under the granted license.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that continuing to use the service means you accept any changes to these terms made by Meta.

“We will notify you ... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms ... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You are bound by new rules simply by keeping your account open, with little opportunity to negotiate or formally reject changes without leaving.

Meta can change the terms with 30 days' notice. Continued use constitutes acceptance, meaning you do not have explicit opt-out consent mechanisms other than deleting your account.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing to be at least 13 years old to use these services.

“You cannot use Facebook if: - You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Users under 13 are not allowed to use the service.

The terms explicitly prohibit users under 13. There is no indication of specific data collection practices for children beyond this age bar.
