What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta wide-ranging rights to copy, share, and modify your posted content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose exclusive control over your creative work, allowing Meta and its partners to reuse or adapt it broadly.

Meta takes extensive rights to your content, including the ability to sublicense it to others and modify it globally, which persists until deletion is fully processed.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to waive most legal claims against Meta for damages or service failures.

“Our Products... are provided "as is," ... DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits... damages”

What that means: If the service fails or causes losses, you generally cannot sue for damages or expect compensation.

Meta disclaims all guarantees regarding service quality and limits its financial liability to users to the maximum extent allowed by law.

Medium cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to let Meta track your activity both on and off their platforms to personalize ads.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your activity on other websites and apps may be monitored and combined with your Facebook profile to target ads.

The terms explicitly state that data from outside Meta products is used to tailor your experience and advertising.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where data stays in backups for up to 90 additional days.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains accessible within internal systems long after you believe it has been erased.

Data removal is not immediate; residual copies remain in backup systems for significant periods after request.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to have your data retained longer than usual for safety, legal, or investigation purposes.

“Content will not be deleted within 90 days... where immediate deletion would restrict our ability to: investigate or identify illegal activity... comply with legal obligations”

What that means: Your data may be kept indefinitely if Meta decides it is needed for legal or safety investigations.

Retentions policies allow indefinite holding of content for security investigations or legal compliance reasons.

Medium cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to a unified set of rules that apply across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

“We help you find and connect with people... across the Meta Products you use... e.g., Instagram or Messenger”

What that means: One action or agreement affects your experience across several major social media brands.

The terms govern a unified ecosystem spanning multiple named platforms, linking data and accounts together.

Lower cost

Forced arbitration or class-action waiver

You are agreeing to strict jurisdiction rules that may limit where you can file lawsuits.

“If you are a consumer... you may resolve your claim in any competent court... In all other cases... dispute must be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court”

What that means: Your ability to choose a local court for legal disputes depends on whether you are classified as a consumer.

While consumers can often use local courts, business users and non-consumers are forced into specific US courts, narrowing access.
