In short

  • This document explains how Reddit collects, uses, and shares your information when you use its services.
  • It outlines that much of what you post is public and can be seen and shared by others.
  • It also describes how your data is used for personalized advertising and how it is retained.

What you accept

If you use this site

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

Fineprint cannot see whether you agreed. This page is posted on their site. Open the original if you need to know how they say it applies.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that any public content you submit will be shared publicly and freely by Reddit.

    This product

“By using the Services, you are directing us to share this information publicly and freely.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to be bound by future changes to this privacy policy simply by continuing to use Reddit's services.

    This product

“By continuing to use our Services after Privacy Policy changes go into effect, you agree to be bound by the revised policy.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing that Reddit can change this Privacy Policy at any time, and your continued use of the services means you accept the new terms.

“By continuing to use our Services after Privacy Policy changes go into effect, you agree to be bound by the revised policy.”

What that means: The company can change the policy, potentially introducing new terms, without requiring your explicit consent beyond your continued use of the service.

Reddit reserves the right to change its Privacy Policy at any time. Your continued use of the services after such changes means you automatically accept the new terms.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow Reddit to collect information about your activity on third-party websites and apps that use Reddit's integrated services or advertising technology.

“We may also receive information about you, including log and usage data and cookie information, from third-party sites that integrate our Services, including our embeds and advertising technology or app store APIs. For example, when you visit a site that uses Reddit Embeds, we may receive information about the web page you visited. Similarly, if an advertiser incorporates Reddit’s ad technology, Reddit may receive limited information about your activity on the advertiser’s site or app, such as whether you bought something from the advertiser.”

What that means: Reddit gathers information about your online behavior from websites and apps beyond their platform, contributing to a more detailed profile of your interests and activities.

Reddit tracks your activity across other websites and applications that integrate with their services, embeds, or advertising technology. This allows them to collect data on your browsing and purchase habits outside of Reddit.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that your posts and comments will remain visible even after you delete your account unless you remove them manually.

“When you delete your account, your profile is no longer visible to other users and disassociated from content you posted under that account. Please note, however, that the posts, comments, and messages you submitted prior to deleting your account will still be visible to others unless you first delete the specific content.”

What that means: Even after you delete your account, your previous contributions may still be publicly accessible on Reddit.

Deleting your account does not automatically remove all your content from the platform. Your past posts, comments, and messages remain visible unless you manually delete each one before account deletion.

Medium cost

Data sold or shared with third parties

You are agreeing to allow Reddit to share your personal identifiers with third-party advertisers to personalize ads for you.

“third-party ad serving and measurement providers who help us and advertisers serve relevant ads and measure the performance of ads (by disclosing information such as cookie IDs, your IP address, and/or a hashed version of your email; these third parties may combine that information with other information they already have about you to provide services to Reddit)”

What that means: Your identifiers and online activity are shared with advertising companies, potentially for targeted ads across different platforms.

Reddit shares some of your data, like cookie IDs and hashed email, with third-party advertising partners. These partners can combine this with other data they have to serve you personalized ads.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that Reddit can keep some of your personal information, such as identifiers, for various business reasons, including to prevent you from creating new accounts after you have been banned.

“We store the information we collect for as long as it is necessary for the purpose(s) for which we originally collected it. We may retain certain information for legitimate business purposes and/or if we believe doing so is in accordance with, or as required by, any applicable law. For example, if you violate our policies and your account is suspended or banned, we may store the identifiers used to create the account (such as phone number) to prevent you from creating new accounts.”

What that means: Your data might be retained for an indefinite period for various internal reasons, even if you try to delete your account or are banned.

Reddit can keep your personal data for 'legitimate business purposes' or to comply with laws, which can be vague and allow for extended retention. This includes keeping identifiers even if you are banned, to prevent you from making new accounts.

If these terms already apply to you

Keep this list. Fineprint cannot undo or cancel something you already agreed to at the company.
