In short

  • You are accepting terms that allow Meta to use your personal data to show you personalized ads and sponsored content.
  • You grant the company a broad, permanent license to use, copy, and share any content you upload.
  • You also accept that account deletion can take up to nine months in some cases.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to let Meta show you targeted ads based on your data and activity.

    This product

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to give Meta a worldwide, transferable, and sub-licensable right to host, copy, and distribute your uploaded content.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Meta a perpetual and sublicensable license to use your user-generated content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose control over how your photos, videos, and text are used, copied, or modified by Meta or its partners.

The agreement gives the company extensive rights to your content, including the ability to sublicense it to others and create derivative works beyond what is needed to run the service.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to have your activity on other websites and apps tracked to customize your experience.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior across the broader internet is tracked and analyzed to influence what you see.

The terms explicitly state that they collect and use data from your activities on websites and apps outside of Meta's own products to build your profile.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to accept the service 'as is' with no guarantees of safety or security.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... To the extent permitted by law, we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES...”

What that means: You have limited recourse if the service fails or causes harm, as the company accepts minimal responsibility.

The company disclaims all warranties regarding safety, security, or functionality, limiting their liability to $100 regardless of actual damages.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to delayed deletion where data remains in backups for up to 90 days after removal.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data persists longer than expected because it stays in backup archives.

Even after you request deletion, your data remains in backup systems for an additional period that is not immediately visible to the user.
